The United States immigration department has started to largely cracked down on the international population. Certain measures are being taken at every step in order to cut down the volume of the international population traveling to the United States.

H 1B visa applicants are facing growing uncertainty as delays increase due to a sharp rise in 221 g slips issued at US consulates.

In recent weeks, many applicants, including a large number from India, are not receiving immediate approvals after their visa interviews. Instead, they are being placed under administrative processing, which can significantly extend waiting times.

The main reason behind this trend is enhanced scrutiny by US authorities, especially related to social media screening.

Consular officers are now reviewing applicants’ online presence more closely as part of routine background checks. Even candidates with complete documentation and clear employment records are being asked additional questions or issued 221 g slips for further review.

A 221 g slip does not mean rejection, but it does pause the visa process until the additional checks are completed. For some applicants, approvals come within a few days. For others, the wait can stretch into weeks, creating stress around job start dates, travel plans, and employment continuity.

Indian professionals, who form a major share of H 1B applicants, are particularly affected. Many are advised to remain patient, ensure accurate information across all documents, and avoid inconsistencies in online profiles. Until processing stabilizes, delays are likely to remain a concern for those planning to work in the United States.
