Sharp Drop in US Student Visas for Indians Amid Tighter Vetting
In the academic year 2023-2024, Indians surpassed Chinese students as the largest group studying in the US.
By: Tupaki Desk | 9 July 2025 10:51 AM ISTRecent data from the US Department of State indicates a significant drop in student visas issued to Indian students at the start of this season. From March to May, only 9,906 F-1 visas were granted to Indian students. This is a 27% decrease compared to the same period last year and even lower than during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the academic year 2023-2024, Indians surpassed Chinese students as the largest group studying in the US. The Open Doors 2024 data highlights this shift. Previously, Chinese students held the top spot, but now Indian students have taken over.
Visa Application Process
The US diplomatic representative recently emphasized the importance of applying for visas promptly. "Our visa issuance process is crucial for national security and public safety. Applicants should apply as soon as possible," they stated. Overseas posts have begun scheduling non-immigrant visas, and applicants are advised to check appointment availability on embassy websites.
The Trump administration's actions against international students and visa cancellations for those involved in pro-Palestinian protests have made students cautious. Indian students were among those affected by these measures. Additionally, from May 27 to June 18, visa applications were halted for two weeks due to stringent social media vetting processes.
Impact on Visa Numbers
The usual busy season for student visas is between March and July, coinciding with the August/September semester start. However, this year saw a decline in numbers during March-May compared to previous years: 10,894 visas in 2022, 14,987 in 2023, and 13,478 in 2024.
The US representative added that they are working diligently on completing thorough vetting processes for visa applications to ensure no issues arise from applicants entering the country.
