Netflix is the biggest OTT platform in the world. It has been on top since the past decade across the globe and it offers a wide variety of content. Whilst there was a small dip in its viewership in the last few years, it had significant growth in the first quarter of 2024 as 9.3 million new subscribers were added globally. The total subscribers for Netflix worldwide are 269.6 million which converts to 27 crore people by March. Amazon Prime Video stands in second place with more than 20 crore subscribers.

The growth of Netflix and its subscribers is mainly due to its ad-supported streaming plans and sources say that the OTT platform's growth will be a bit slower in the second quarter. Also, Netflix will put an end to giving out quarterly numbers. Apparently, the revenue increased by 14.8% to close $9.4 billion and the operating income has touched $2.6 billion.

But things are quite different in India as Netflix did not even find a place in the Top 5 list. Hotstar takes the first place with 5 crore subscribers in India while Jio Cinema occupies the second place with 2.8 crores and a lot of it is due to the IPL streaming. Interestingly, Amazon Prime Video who many thought would take the first spot was found in 3rd place with 2.25 subscribers. Sony Liv had 1.25 subscribers while Zee5 secured fifth spot with 80 lakh subscribers. Netflix is in the 6th spot with 65 lakh subscribers.

Netflix was ignored by the public for a long time due to its high subscription fee. It is 199 per month now and doesn't offer a yearly subscription. Also, the content offered on Netflix was not Indian family friendly for a long time. But the platform is buying a lot of noted films lately which may help in its growth in the coming days. Let us see what happens.
