The Supreme Court on Friday extended the bail of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and others till May 12, 2015 in connection with the disproportionate assets case. The apex court extended the bail of Ms. Jayalalithaa and the three other accused in the case — V.K. Sasikala, J. Ilavarasi and V.N. Sudhakaran .

The apex court had earlier last week referred a plea seeking removal of a special public prosecutor in the case. The court extended the time after a senior counsel told the court that after the split verdict on the DMK leader's plea on the appointment of G. Bhavani Singh as special public prosecutor, it has now to be decided by a three-judge bench of the apex court.

Jayalalithaa was sentenced to four years in jail on September 17 last year in a high-profile corruption case that has lasted nearly two decades.A special court in Karnataka found Jayalalithaa guilty and she has to step down as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Following the news of her arrest, JayalalithaaÂ’s supporters had clashed with the police and violence erupted in parts of Tamil Nadu.

Jayalalithaa has challenged her conviction in the case along with three others by a Bangalore court. On October 17, 2014, Jayalalithaa was granted bail by the Supreme Court on grounds of poor health. Chief Justice H.L. Dattu asked the chief justice of the Karnataka high court to constitute a special bench that will hear the appeal on a day-to-day basis and complete the hearing within three months.
