Chennai Metro rolled out for the first time on Monday when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who was connected through a video conference from her office pressed a button signalling the flag off. Preethi who holds a deplamo in Engineering quit her job after making her mind to join the Chennai Metro. She underwent a training process for about one-and-a-half year to emerge as the first women to be selected to drove the Chennai Metro Train. Chennai Metro Rail reached Koyambedu from Alandur metro station (a 10 km stretch) within 18 minutes. This Metro Rail will have four coaches and the total capacity is 1,276 passengers.
Phase 1 of Chennai Metro Rail covering a 45 km stretch have two corridors and it costs Rs 16,500 crore. By the end of 2015, Phase 2 connecting Chennai Central and St.Thomas Mount will be ready.
