Goa rural development agency Francisco Pacheco who was convicted in an assault case by the court resigned to his post today. He resigned from the cabinet on Friday saying he did not want to cause further embarrassment to the BJP-led government in the state.

Pacheco submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar in the morning and it was accepted by Parsekar . He was booked in July 2006 for assaulting Kapil Natekar, a junior engineer in the state power department.

FIR was lodged against Pacheco in July 2006 by Kapil alleging that Pacheco abused and slapped him in his chamber. Natekar had been called to the minister's office for not attending a telephone call by Pacheco's personal assistant.

After hearing the case a judicial magistrate had convicted Pacheco and sentenced him to one-year jail term and a fine of Rs 5,000. But an appellate court reduced the jail term to six months and the fine to Rs 1,500.

Pacheco, who heads the Goa Vikas Party, was sworn in as minister during a cabinet expansion in November.Pacheco has a series of cases for his involvement in extortion, assault, bigamy and money laundering.
