Chief Minister Amma J Jayalalithaa took a massive lead over her nearest rival, CPI's C. Mahendran at the end of six round of vote count on Tuesday in the Radhakrishnan Nagar assembly seat by-election.

The election was held on last Saturday and counting of votes began at 8 a.m.After sixth round of counting, Jayalalithaa gets 58,297 votes, CPI's Mahendran 4,349, Independent 1,020 and NOTA 505.

The by-election was necessitated following AIADMK's P Vetrivel vacating the seat in May, apparently to enable Jayalalithaa seek re-election. Opposition parties like the DMK, the PMK, the DMDK, the Congress, the BJP and the MDMK have stayed away from the contest.However, the two Left parties - CPI and CPI-M - have fielded Mahendran as their joint candidate

After Karanataka High court acquitted her in assets case Jayalalithaa assumed the office of chief minister again on 23 May and would have to be elected as MLA within six months.
