Can a woman who did not even complete her high school, rise to the level of becoming a self-styled diplomat, winning the confidence of both UAE and Kerala Government? Can a woman who has a serious case of forgery registered against her, go on to become a key member of the Kerala government? Can she become a key functionary in the Kerala Chief Minister's office.
These are the key questions that are now being asked ever since Swapna Suresh, wanted in a case of gold smuggling using diplomatic cargo, has gone underground. She has gone underground a day before the diplomatic cargo was opened on suspicion. It was found that 30 kg of gold was smuggled using diplomatic cargo addressed to the UAE consulate general office in Thiruvananthapuram. Her close connections to former principal secretary M Sivasankar, who was part of the CMO have raised suspicion. Sources say her connections with Sivasankar date back to the days when the latter was the chairperson of the Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL). He was also the Chief Minister's Principal Secretary, a key post in the CMO.
All this has turned out to be a huge embarrassment for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He has ordered a probe into the matter even as the BJP and the Congress have accused him of trying to cover up the whole scam.
