Huge swarms of Pakistani locusts have descended on agricultural fields in Gujarat and Rajasthan and inflicted major damage on crops of mustard, cumin, cotton, potato and wheat.

Top officials of the Agriculture Ministry said massive swarms of locusts which are mainly tropical grasshoppers with strong powers of flight.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Paresh Dhanani said the state government's measures to contain the locust attack were inadequate. The government should have used aircraft to spray insecticides

Most swarms enter Gujarat through Rajasthan and Pakistan, riding on the wind to travel across large distances. This is the first time since 1993-'94 that Gujarat has witnessed such a locust invasion. The state administration has launched a huge pesticide-spraying operation to kill the insects
