Were actress-turned-MP Sumalatha's telephones tapped? Yes, say police records. During the Janata Dal (Secular) - Congress Government, several leaders were under watch. Even those belonging to the ruling party were watched and their telephones snooped into. The Kumaraswamy government had snooped on Sumalatha as she was suspected of being in contact with the BJP.
Sumalatha's husband Ambareesh,a Kannada super star and a former minister, was in the Congress. After his passing away, Sumalatha began feeling that the Janata Dal and the Congress were out to obliterate the legacy of Ambareesh, who was hugely popular in Mandya. So, she got in touch with the BJP leaders. The BJP wanted to support her if she ran for the elections as an independent. It said that the BJP would not put up a candidate if she contested as an independent. During this whole period, the Kumaraswamy government tapped her phones and followed her conversations.
Sumalatha later contested and won as an independent from Mandya Lok Sabha seat and the BJP backed her. She defeated the then CM Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Gowda in a keen contest. During the campaign, the Congress and the JDU have released some of Sumalatha's telephonic conversations to malign her. She had later lodged a complaint with the police claiming that her phones were being tapped.
