Are pigeons being used by enemy countries for espionage in India? Is the age-old information gathering practice of kings and armies being put to practice in the era of digital communications and internet? It appears so. Several incidents involving capturing of pigeons with foreign tags in several parts of India's coast have been reported.

Recently, a pigeon with a Chinese tag on its right leg was caught in Cheemakurthi area of Prakasam district. The tag is in yellow cur. Sources say this could have been employed by Chinese to gather information about india in times of tension between the two countries.

Four such pigeons have recently been caught in Rourkela and Kendapada in Vizag. One of the two pigeons had an aluminium tage with Chinese characters. In Sundargarh area too a pigeon was caught by one Sarbeswar Choutroy. He has informed the police about the incident. Similar pigion with two rings with Chinese characters was cited on the Puri-Konark highway.

The police said they were investigating the matter. They said that there are no cameras, chips and electronic equipment on these pigeons. However, Chinese letters are a matter of concern. They said that there was no need for panic.
