Pouring cold water on the hopes of major political parties in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Central Government has made it clear that there will be no hike in the number of assembly seats till 2031. This categorical statement was made by the minister of state for home affairs Nityananda Rai in parliament on Tuesday.

The increase in the number of MLA seats has been a constant demand of the political parties in both the Telugu states. According to the provisions of the AP reorganization act, the number in Telangana should be increased to 153 from 119. The ruling TRS has been stridently demanding this to accommodate those leaders who have joined the party from Congress and the Telugu Desam.

Replying to a question raised by Malkajgiri MP Revanth Reddy, the minister said that as per the article 170 of the constitution, the delimitation of the new constituencies would be taken up only after the census that is held after 2026. Thus, the delimitation is possible only after 2031. This also means that the same number of MLA seats would be there till 2031. If the delimitation is taken up afresh, then the Telangana would have `53 seats. The number of seats in AP would go up from 175 to 225.
