Lok Sabha Speakers Warning On Defections
X
Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla's comments at the Speakers conference in Dehradun have evoked lot of curiosity. Speaking to the presiding officers of legislative assemblies and councils the otherday, he made interesting observations on defections. He spoke about the tendency of the MLAs from the opposition parties to jump into the ruling party. Several states are facing this problem. Hence this needs to be addressed in the right earnest. In Andhra Pradesh, the then ruling party - TDP - encouraged defections and ensured that 23 MLAs from the YSRCP joined the TDP. The issue of their disqualification was kept pending till the expiry of the term. Some defectors were even made ministers. They were technically in YSRCP, but functioned as TDP MLAs. The same drama was enacted in Telangana during 2014-2019. In Maharashtra and Karnataka too, the sordid drama was enacted

Om Birla called upon the Speakers of various state legislative assemblies to act strictly and dispose of defection cases at the earliest. He said it is the responsibility of the speakers to ensure that the disqualification cases were dealt with quickly. This comment is being seen as a warning to the speakers who are hand in glove with the ruling party and are behaving in a highly partisan way. He told them not to tolerate defections.

AP speaker Tammineni Sitharam too addressed the gathering.
