BJP eats up Congress bit by bit in Manipur

In a development that has left the Congress leadership shell-shocked, as many as eight MLAs, including the state party chief have joined the BJP in Manipur. This has virtually finished off the Congress Party in Manipur. Earlier, Manipur PCC chief Govindas Konthoujam resigned from his post.

This has left the Congress in a state of shock as the state is going to polls early next year. He was appointed party president only last December. Konthoujam is a popular leader and has been a six-time MLA from Bishnupur..

With this the Congress chances of doing better in the 2022 elections now appear bleak. The assembly has 60 seats. The BJP has 25 members, while the Congress has 17. NPP and the NPF have four seats. The Trinamool Congress has one MLA and there are three independents. Three seats are lying vacant in the assembly. The BJP-led alliance has a total of 36 MLAs. Interestingly, in the 2017 elections the Congress had won 28 seats and the BJP had 21 seats. The BJP had formed the government with the help of the allies and began slowly eating up the Congress. Now only 17 Congress MLAs remain. This means, the party has lost eight MLAs so far.
