India had found itself in the middle of a troublesome situation yet again with the Covid impact. The contagious disease had started to spread its wings in the country for one more time resulting in the single-day infections seeing new heights daily. India pulled off the unwanted stint on Friday too.

Breaking all the previous records, India witnessed close to 3 lakh single-day infections in the past 24 hours. The fresh infections are going up steadily and compared to the other day, the single-day cases went up by over 6 percent.

With 2,64,202 fresh COVID cases detected in the last 24 hours, the active cases in the country crossed the 12 lakh mark after a long time. The official data says the active cases stood at 12,72,073. This is the highest count of active cases in the country in the new wave.

The cases are expected to go even further up given the festive season and long weekend. The Sankranti festival is celebrated in many parts of the country but with different names.

Seeing the situation, many states have swung into action and imposed restrictions to curb the infections. While a few states have extended the closure of the educational institutions till the month end of this month, the likes of Andhra Pradesh went for night curfew to bring the situation under control.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities at Haridwar issued orders that devotees should not visit River Ganga on January 14 on the eve of Makar Sankranti to stop the further spread of the contagious disease. Not just that, the festive celebration was also banned by the District Magistrate.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a key meeting with the Chief Ministers in the light of the problematic situations prevailing in the country. During the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of administering the vaccine doses for the beneficiaries.

Highlighting how vaccination and containing the deadly respiratory disease is the need of the hour for the country, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi had urged the states to go for the local containment to bring down the fresh cases.
