The Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi notified the rules in connection with buying properties in Jammu and Kashmir Union territory for the people who live outside the region.

The amendments made by the Centre allow people who won't belong to the region also to buy lands there. The government issued a gazette notification in this regard.

This move from the Union Government came a year after removing Article 370 and Article 35-A in Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 deals with the special status of the region.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the press after the historic decision. Talking to the reporters, he said, the new amendments will not enable the transfer of Agricultural lands to non-agriculture lands.

Talking about the new amendments, Former Advocate General Mohammad Ishaq Qadri said as the non-residents can also purchase lands in the region, the land sales will see a flood of sales.

However, the National Conference leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah slammed the amendments made to the laws and said the new amendments are unacceptable.

"Unacceptable amendments to the land ownership laws of J&K. Even the tokenism of domicile has been done away with when purchasing non-agricultural land & transfer of agricultural land has been made easier. J&K is now up for sale & the poorer small land holding owners will suffer," his Tweet read.
