The controversial bill Citizenship(Amendment) Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha amid strong resistance from the opposition parties. The Bill states about giving Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from the neighboring countries Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Amit Shah said Indian Muslims need not worry about the Bill.

Though the Bill was passed, the opposition has termed the Bill “unconstitutional” and "an assault on the democratic and secular fabric of the nation".

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad said, 125 votes were voted in favour of the bill while 99 were voted against it.

Interestingly, Shiv Sena took an exit from the House just before the voting, which raised its voice against the bill and opposed it. Amit Shah earlier took a dig at Shiv Sena and asked why it changed its stand on the Bill which supported the bill in the Lok Sabha.

No provision in citizenship bill touches citizenship of Muslims," Shah said.

"Indian Muslims are citizens of the country and will remain so.... Citizenship bill is not to snatch anyone's Indian citizenship. Muslims have no need to fear or worry," he observed.

Referring to the statements made by Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan, Amit Shah said: "India will never become Muslim-mukt even if you want so."
