Eight Pakistani people residing in Kota city of Rajasthan since the year 2000 were granted Indian citizenship by the district administration. According to sources, they had fled Sindh district of Pakistan after being religiously persecuted.

The people who granted citizenship said that they're very happy about it. They expressed relief about the fact that now they can lead lives according to the Indian constitution as an Indian citizen.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had initiated a campaign in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by the Indian Parliament earlier this month and became an Act with Presidential assent on December 12. The legislation provides Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014.
