Senior BJP leader and former minister P Manikyala Rao died of coronavirus on Saturday in a private hospital in Vijayawada. He was 59 and is survived by his wife and a daughter.

The senior politician was admitted to the Hospital in Eluru 20 days ago after testing positive for the deadly virus. He was shifted to a private hospital in Vijayawada a week ago due to difficulty in breathing and put on a ventilator.

Manikyala Rao was elected as an MLA from Tadepalligudem in 2014 and served as Endowments Minister in the cabinet of N Chandrababu Naidu from 2014 to 2018.

Condoling the demise of Manikyala Rao, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the West Godavari district collector to perform the last rites with state honours.

The funeral was completed with formalities at the Humanitarian Cemetery at Thadepalligudem on Saturday. BJP state president Somu Veerraju along with his family members attended the funeral. Since the former MLA died with the virus, only 20 people are allowed for the last rites.
