Exit Polls Have Egg On Their Face

See who had egg all over the face? Know who were evading the media all through the day even as the GHMC election results were tumbling out of the ballot boxes? No marks for guessing. It's the pollsters. They had all predicted that the BJP would not cross 30. Many of them said the BJP would get just about 10 to 15 seats.

They were exit polls. But, when the exact poll results came out, the BJP proved to be a stunner. It stunned not just the TRS into silence, but all the pollsters who wrote off the BJP. When the votes were counted, it became clear that the TRS managed only a slender lead over the BJP and fell far too short of bagging the coveted Mayoral post.

Pollster Aaraa said the TRS would get 78 seats, while CPS gave 96 seats. People's Pulse said the TRS will get up to 78, while Jan Ki Baat said the TRS would get 74 seats. It now emerges that not one survey organisation could predict the actual number. As for the BJP Aaraa said the BJP would bet 28 seats, while CPS gave 12 seats, HMR 31 seats, People's Pulse gave 25 and HMR 31 seats. But when the last vote was counted, the BJP emerged the second largest party with 48 seats.

Even in case of MIM, the exit polls failed to make the right prediction. Though they were close to the mark in the number of seats the MIM would win, they failed to predict that the MIM would be pushed down to the third place. Every survey predicted a second place to the MIM.
