Former Communist senior leader Gurdas Dasgupta (83) passed away in Kolkata this morning. Served as the deputy general secretary of the CPI. He was elected general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress in 2001 and worked hard for the welfare of workers.

"He was suffering from lung cancer for many months," said West Bengal CPI Secretary Swapan Benerjee.

"He passed away at his home in Kolkata at 6 am. He was suffering from lung cancer for quite some time. Due to his poor health he had relinquished party posts but was a member of CPI National executive council," he added.

Even as an MP, he would buy himself a packet of milk in Parliament and take it home. Dasgupta lived in a small bungalow in Delhi's Canning Lane. He had a frugal lifestyle and would often wear the same shirt for two consecutive days. He was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1985 and later to the Lok Sabha in 2004. In 2009, he was elected MP from the Ghatal constituency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his grief for the sudden demise of the Veteran Communist.

"Shri Gurudas Dasgupta Ji was one of the most committed and articulate proponents of his ideology. He was a strong voice in Parliament, whose interventions were keenly heard across the political spectrum. Saddened by his passing away. May his soul rest in peace," read his tweet.
