About 65,000 H-1B Visas have been allotted by the United States annually under the General Quota. In addition, 20,000 Visas are granted under the Master's Cap.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received 1.9 lakh H-1B Visa applications for the financial year 2018-19. Generally, More than 60 percent of the H-1B visas will be bagged by Indians. TCS, Cognizant, Wipro and Infosys are the companies which are able to attain most H-1B Visas.

As of now, H-1B Visa petitions have to be filed upfront with all the necessary evidence. This documentation process is the toughest part for the Companies which move H-1B Visa applications. Employers used to hire experts or agencies to get the paper work right so as to obtain the required number of H-1B Visas.

From April next year, Companies seeking H-1B Visas should pre-register electronically for the annual H-1B Lottery. They need to submit all the necessary paper work only for those employees who obtain H-1B Visa in the lottery. This new process saves administrative cost for the companies sponsoring H-1B visas. The US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has approved the new rule.

Analysts say, New Rule related to the H-1B Visa Lottery System might offer much more freedom for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in deciding who can work in the US.
