Indian star shuttler Sania Mirza, who is taking part in the prestigious Australian Open tournament gave an insight into her retirement plans. The six Grand Slam titles winner Sania Mirza had surprised everyone with her statements on bidding goodbye to the game.

The Hyderabadi player said this will be the last season for her as a Tennis player. With this statement, Sania Mirza hinted at bidding goodbye to the game putting an end to the glorious and illustrious career. Sania Mirza made the shocking statement after she and Nadiia Kichenok(Ukraine player) lost the first round of the women's doubles with 4-6, 6-7(5).

In the post-match press conference, Sania Mirza gave an insight into how she is playing the game by traveling with her son, who is just 3 years old.

Talking about her condition, Sania Mirza said her knee is hurting as she is getting old. However, Sania Mirza did not hold this as a reason for the defeat in the opening round.

“Having said that, I still want to play the season because I'm enjoying it enough to play the year. I've worked very hard to come back, get fit, lose the weight and try to set a good example for mothers, new mothers to follow their dreams as much as they can. Beyond this season, I don't feel my body doing it. It's beat," Sania Mirza said in the press conference.

The 35-year-old had won six Grand Slam titles in her career. Sania Mirza was ranked India's top player in the singles category by the Women's Tennis Association. For almost a decade, Sania Mirza held the top position.

Sania Mirza was at the peaks of her rankings during mid-2007. Her rank was the best for any female Tennis player to have represented India. She held the world rank of 27 at that time.

Sania had shifted her focus to doubles from Singles after suffering a major wrist injury. While playing singles Sania Mirza defeated several notable players like Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva, Marion Bartoli, Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, and Victoria Azarenka.

Sania Mirza tied the knot with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik. The couple was blessed with a boy who was named Izhaan Mirza Malik.
