WhatsApp informed several Indian Users in this week about the hacking by Israeli Spyware earlier this year. The victims include Government Authorities, Journalists, Lawyers and Activists.

During the period when Lok Sabha Elections were happening in May this year, Indian Journalists and Activists became a target of hackers for a period of two weeks. Facebook which owns WhatsApp sued Israeli Cybersecurity Company NSO on Tuesday for allegedly using the Messaging App to spread malware to 1,400 users in across 20 countries.

NSO-developed spyware 'Pegasus' was used to hack the mobiles. Using it, Hackers gained access to the messages, calls and passwords of the Users. Pegasus can also make phone into a microphone so that conversations can be listened in a room.

However, NSO claimed its technology isn't designed to use against human rights activists and journalists. It says, Pegasus is licensed only to legitimate government agencies.

After the spyware attack, WhatsApp issued an update for the protection of the Users information. As much as $75,000 was sought in damages from NSO by the Messaging App.
