The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation hopes that the East-West project under the iconic Hooghly river will be completed by the end of March 2022. This iconic project went on to delay with the costs increasing year by year.

Talking about this project, Manas Sarkar, managing director at the KMRC that they are waiting to get huge funds of Rs. 200 million in the coming two years as the first installment of this iconic project.

The project will be completed with a soft loan of 41.6 billion rupees from the Japan International Cooperation Agency which holds a 48.5% share in this.

"About 40% of total transport demand will be tackled by these two metro services," Sarkar maintained.

"It will be a relief for environmental pollution and the city should be much more decongested, " he said.

"We don't anticipate any further cost escalation now," he added.

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to confirm the same. He has tweeted in the Hindi language.

"The underwater train is an "example of excellent engineering. This train is a symbol of the progress of the railway in the country. With this, Kolkata residents will feel comfortable, and the country will feel proud," his Tweet read.
