Three silver lion statues embellished on the chariot of the famous Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri hill in Vijayawada went missing and the leg of another lion idol was broken in September 2020.

The loss of the silver statues came to knowledge when the authorities took up an audit of the temple properties and reviewed the security following orders from the government in the wake of the Antarvedi chariot fire incident.

After this incident, the Endowment minister Vellampalli Srinivas said that the chariot was not used after the YSRCP government took charge of the state and the private agencies handed the security of several temples in the state. However, the government formed a SIT to solve the idol case.

In a latest development, the SIT held one of the accused in the incident and found that an interstate gang was involved in the incident. The police have speed up the investigation and an official statement regarding the same is expected soon.
