The 2002 Gujarat Riots triggered by the burning of a train remain the darkest episode in the state. The violence saw two communities targeting and killing each other. The Gujarat riots also saw a pregnant woman becoming a victim of gang rape. The accused did not see that she was carrying at that time.
One Bilkis Bano, who was five months pregnant was gang raped by as many as 11 accused. As the case shocked the entire nation, the eleven accused were slapped with life imprisonment. Now the case saw another big development as the convicts were released on Independence Day.
The Gujarat government released the convicts from prison on the eve of Independence Day. Moreover, the convicts received a big welcome as their relatives celebrated their release by greeting them with sweets.
Soon after the release of the convicts, the opposition parties started breathing fire on the saffron party. As the BJP is in power in the state and at the centre the criticism turned intense. The likes of Rahul Gandhi and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi are slamming the BJP.
The criticism is not stopping and the attack on the saffron party got momentum. The opposition parties say that the BJP is making big claims that it works for women empowerment, but the reality is different. Is this what women empowerment is, asks the opposition parties.
