Is This How This CM Will Enter Legislative Council?

Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray will earn the dubious distinction of becoming an MLC from governor quota. Thus he would become the first CM who has not won any election. He would be nominated to the Maharashtra legislative council in the Governor's quoa.

As per the Article 164 (4) of the Indian constitution, a person who becomes a CM but is not a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council, has to become within six months after being sworn in. Though Uddhav is popular enough to win from any seat in the state, Corona lockdown has made it impossible to hold elections now. Meanwhile the six month period for Uddhav will end on May 28. So, the Maharashtra Cabinet has decided that he should be made an MLC in the governor's quota. The cabinet, which met on Thursday in the absence of Uddhav, has decided to recommend his name to Governor Bhagath Singh Koshiyari.

Presently two nominated MLC seats are lying vacant in Maharashtra. Uddhav will be nominated by the Government. Thus, he will become the first CM anywhere in India to enter the house as a Governor-nominated member.
