The President of India Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts in the brutal incident, Nirbhaya case. The Ministry of Home Affairs has forwarded the mercy plea to the President.

Earlier, Nirbhaya's mother has requested PM Modi to hang the convicts to death and said, "Till now, I never talked about politics, I have only asked for justice with folded hands. But now I want to say that those people who protested on the streets with the tricolor and black flags in 2012, today they are playing with my daughter's death for political gains,"

"The Home Ministry has forwarded the mercy petition of Mukesh Singh to the President. The ministry has reiterated the recommendation of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for its rejection," an official said.

After knowing that the mercy petition was rejected, Nirbhaya's father felt happy and said, "We are happy that the chances of them getting hanged have increased. We are assured that as soon as they file mercy pleas they will be rejected".

Lawyer Vrinda Grover who is representing Mukesh said, "The applicant is entitled to a fair consideration of his mercy plea without the shadow of the noose hanging over him... There is no purpose in keeping the warrant alive as it is in defiance of law".

"The same people who took to the streets to protest against the incident in 2012 are now using my daughter's death for political gains. I feel stuck in the middle of this blame game," Asha Devi, Nirbhaya's mother said.
