Mim To Enter Ap Politics: Who Will Gain? Who Will Lose?

Will Hyderabad-based Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, contest the elections from Andhra Pradesh in 2024? The buzz about this is gaining ground in the Telugu political circles. The MIM had already announced that it could contest from the Muslim majority seats in AP long back. But, none took that seriously. However, indications are that the MIM is preparing ground for contesting in AP too.

The MIM is currently on an expansion spree. It had made a mark in North Karnataka, Maharashtra, especially the erstwhile Nizam state, and in Bihar. It had also contested in West Bengal and Maharashtra with lukewarm success. It is also said to be planning to contest from UP in a big way and the parties that are dependent on the Muslim vote bank are jittery about it. Now it is planning to foray into AP also.

Andhra Pradesh has a sizeable Muslim population in Kadapa, Kurnool, parts of Anantapur district, Guntur city and Vijayawada old city. The Muslim votes are crucial in at least 15 seats in the state. Till now, the MIM has been extending silent support to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and helped him get Muslim votes. The party has a soft corner for YSRCP as late YSR had given 4 per cent reservations to the Muslims. Now it has reportedly decided to enter the fray directly.

Will it contest all the muslim dominated seats? Or will it have some kind of understanding with the ruling YSRCP? Will this lead to a communal polarisation in AP and finally benefit the BJP, which is seen as a counterfoil to the communal minority politics? Let's wait and see how things pan out!!!
