Replying to a question in the Parliament the Home Ministery gave a written reply that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the only Special Protection Group(SPG) protectee.
The question was asked by the DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran who wants to know "the details of the current protectees under the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Protection Group (SPG) in the country".
In his response, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy, "Security is provided on the basis of threat assessment by central security agency. It is subject to periodic review. Based on such review, the security cover is continued or modified."
According to the newly amended SPG Act states that the elite force holds the responsibility for the protection of the serving Prime Minister and the immediate family staying at the official residence of PM.
The act also says that the former prime minister and the immediate family for five years since leaving the Prime Minister's Office. Since Narendra Modi is serving as Prime Minister for more than five years, former PM Manmohan Singh will not be entitled to the SPG cover.
