In the light of devotees demanding the authorities to permit them to visit the Srimandir in Puri, more than 400 people at the temple have tested positive for the novel Coronavirus so far.

While filing a counter-affidavit at the Orissa High Court over allowing the devotees to the holy shrine, the Orissa government said as many as 351 servitors and 53 employees tested Corona positive.

According to some media reports, in the counter affidavit, the government said 379 people out of 822 people who underwent pandemic tests have tested positive for the dreaded virus.

However, the rituals at the shrine are underway. If more servitors test Coronavirus positive, there might be a disruption in the rituals.

A lion share of servitors are observing isolation, as per the COVID-19 protocols. This development resulted in a shortage of servitors to carry out the rituals at the holy shrine.

Talking about the decision to reopen the shrine, Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Administrator (Development) Ajay Kumar Jena said, the decision can affect the family members of servitors.
