Based on a tip-off, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has carried out raids at two cities and nabbed nine operatives of al Qaeda in connection with terror plots in major cities, some sources said.

Some media reports claimed that the nabbed operatives were hatching plans to target the Kochi Naval base and shipyard. It is believed that the officials have seized material from them that is used to make bombs.

The NIA has arrested six operatives from West Bengal while the other three were nabbed from God's Own county Kerala. NIA sleuths have found out an encrypted Telegram group and the information is being decoded.

The Central agency is digging deeper to check, whether any locals in these places have extended any sorts of support to the terrorists.

It has been widely reported that the NIA is conducting raids in Ernakulam and Murshidabad and more arrests are likely to take place. Kerala police are coordinating with them in this regard.

The raids were conducted after the agency has learned that an inter-state Al-Qaeda group is operating in West Bengal and Kerala to strike terror. Following which raids were carried out.

The arrested terrorists will be produced before the court in Kerala and West Bengal respectively, NIA might seek directives for the police custody.
