Bal Thackeray has a long history and legacy in Maharashtra politics. Though his family never ventured into electoral politics he controlled state politics. He had a grip on state politics that the government had to take his permission to host an India-Pakistan cricket match in Maharashtra.
His Shiv Sena party is a strong Hindutva party and never missed an opportunity to bat for Hindu rights. Shiv Sena is the first party to demand reservation for Kashmiri Pandits. Reacting to Bal Thackeray's demand the Maharashtra government gave reservations to the Pandits.
