The Blackcaps led by Kane Williamson had crushed the Indian team to win the inaugural World Test Championship title. The New Zealand team had put up an all-round show and overpowered the Virat men.

New Zealand came to bat with a target of 139 in 53 overs. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had scalped two wickets when New Zealand's score was 44. Skipper Kane, who missed the half-century in the first innings had scored 52 runs in the second innings. Ross Taylor played helpful innings of 47.

Locking horns with one of the best sides in the world, Indian batsmen failed to make big scores. India started its second innings with an overnight score of 64/2. The New Zealand bowling attack restricted India to 170.

New Zealand's tall bowler Kyle Jamieson led the pace attack by claiming seven wickets, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult made valuable contributions in dismissing Indian players.

India made an unwanted record of losing the sixth ICC knockout match. The trend started with the ICC World T20 final in 2014, followed by the 2015 50-over World Cup, ICC Semi-Final in 2016, Champions Trophy the next year, and the semifinal in the 2019 World Cup. Now the WTC Final.
