Is the Congress Party planning to give a bigger role to Priyanka Gandhi? Is the party planning to make her a Rajya Sabha member from the Karnataka quota? Is it the beginning of a plan to catapult her to the top position in the party? Is it an attempt to make her the next Congress chief in case Rahul Gandhi is not prepared to take up the big responsibility?

Highly placed sources say that the idea of catapulting Priyanka Gandhi to the top position was thrown up during the three-day Chintan Shivir in Rajasthan's Udaipur. The Congress leaders attending the camp said that Rahul Gandhi should shed his diffidence and take over the reins of the party. They strongly felt that he should directly lead the party and not operate from behind the curtains.

In the event of Rahul Gandhi being not interested to take up the direct leadership, the party should push Priyanka Gandhi into active politics, felt the Congress leaders. As a preliminary measure, she should be made the Rajya Sabha member to get hands-on experience in the daily grind of politics.

Sources said that there was a suggestion that she should be sent to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, where four seats are going to be vacant. Two BJP MPs, including finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and a Congress MP are retiring in June. In addition, another seat is vacant due to the death of Congress leader Oscar Fernandes. Since the Congress has enough numbers, it can easily send Priyanka to the Rajya sabha, sources feel. From there, she can slowly pick up reins and lead the party, the Congress leaders feel.
