Rafale Deal Documents Stolen: Centre Tells SC

The Supreme Court Today began hearing petitions seeking review of its verdict on the controversial Rafale Deal. Union Government informed the Apex Court that documents related to Rafale Deal were stolen from the Defence Ministry.

In addition, Attorney General KK Venugopal issued warning to The Hindu Newspaper on grounds that placing Rafale Deal documents on the public domain is a punishable offence under Official Secrets Act. He told, 'Article written by Senior Journalist N Ram in The Hindu was based on the stolen documents. Investigation into the theft of crucial documents, which are marked secret and classified, is currently under progress. FIR is yet to be registered'.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie has jointly filed the petition complaining Union Government of hiding crucial facts about Rafale Deal from the Supreme Court. He added, 'Rafale Deal pertaining to the procurement of defence material can't be reviewed judicially. Country needs Rafale Jets to defend itself from F-16 Fighter Jets used by Pakistan. Two Squadrons of Rafale Fighter Jets will be come to India soon. First one of them arrives in September 2019’.

SC Bench asked the Centre what action it has taken on the articles written based on stolen documents of Rafale Deal. Next hearing in the case has been adjourned to March 14th.
