Rajiv Gandhi Murder Convicts Write To PM Modi Pleading For Mercy Killing
X
Convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case, Nalini Sriharan and her husband V Sriharan alias Murugan have pled for mercy killing. Nalini had sent the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madras High Court Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi on November 27. Nalini's advocate Pugazhendi says extreme stress has driven Nalini to take this decision.

In the letter, Nalini alleged that they had been ill-treated by prison staff and wanted to be shifted out of Vellore prison. The Tamil Nadu government's decision to release all seven convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution is pending with Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

In July, the court had granted one month parole to Nalini, another convict in the case, after she argued her plea in person for seeking the relief to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding. Payas and six other people Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, S Jayakumar and Nalini are serving a life term in connection with the assassination of Gandhi by a suicide bomber at an election rally in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
