What would you do if you win one million US dollars in a keen contest? Spend the fortune on your bucket-list? Buy yourself a swank new home? Get a sports car? Go on a tour of the world? But this ordinary primary school teacher from Maharashtra's Solapur did none of it. Know what he did? He gave half of the money, ie half a million US dollars to all the ten finalists who competed with him.

Ranjit Singh Disale, a teacher in the ZP Primary School in Solapur's Paritewadi has been awarded one million dollar 'Global Best Teacher 2020' award. The award is given annually to a teacher who innovated teaching methods, made education accessible and brought changes in the system. Disale is selected from among 12000 applicants worldwide. He made it to the final along with another nine teachers and was awarded the prize after an intense contest.

Disale, who teaches in the school, predominated by Kannada students in a Maharashtra village, translated the text books into Kannada and made them available to the students on QR code. His innovative teaching methods have led to 100 per cent attendance in the school. He said that every finalist has worked very hard in his own way to improve teaching and impart education. This can never be an individual effort. It is a collective effort. Hence, I want to share the prize money with them,' he said.

Disale is an engineering dropout and opted for a school teacher's job. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has congratulated Disale on his unique achievement. The award is given by Varkey Foundation.
