Siddipet Congressmen prefer to contest as independents

The Congress in Siddipet Municipality, which will go to polls on April 30, is in a strange situation. The party's leaders and prospective candidates seem to prefer to contest as independents and not on party's symbol. Many leaders have already filed nominations as independents. They did not even approach the party for the election symbol.

Siddipet has been the borough of TRS stalwart Harish Rao. He has been increasing his winning margin in every election. The civic body too has been under his complete control. The Congress has never put up a concerted show in Siddipet. Though it has considerable number of workers, the leaders are not united. As of now, the party in Siddipet is divided into several groups. One group is led by T Narsareddy, former MLA, who is the DCC chief. The other groups are led by Guduru Srinivas, P Harikrishna and Nayini Narsimha Reddy. The party is in total disarray due to this groupism.

As a result, several ticket aspirants have already filed their nomination papers as independent candidates. Interestingly, they did not even approach the party leadership for the hand symbol. Many feel that they stand a better chance of winning if they contested as independents. If the same trend continues, the Congress may be left without any candidates in Siddipet municipality, which has 43 seats.
