The unprecedented move to privatise the Vizag Steel Plant did not go well with the Public of Andhra Pradesh and the trade unions in the state and the shore city as well.

Since the announcement, several forms of protests have been going on in Vizag over the past few weeks. The trade unions of the steel plant have also called for a State bandh on Friday.

The state bandh called by the trade unions got support from the Andhra Pradesh government. The statement government had announced that it would extend its support for the state bandh.

The YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government announced that all the bus services run by the state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation(APSRTC) till 1 PM on the day of state bandh across the state.

It has to be noted that the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reverse back the decision on privatising the Vizag Steel Plant as its the pride of the state.

To extend its supports to ongoing protests against the privatizing, the Andhra Pradesh government had also announced that a resolution would be passed in the state Assembly against the move.

The Vizag Steel Plant has a very long history of nearly five decades, which is the only Indian shore-based steel plant. The movement to have Steel Plant in Vizag got momentum with the slogan Visakha Ukku Andhrula Hakku during the '60s.
