Supreme Court To Have A Hectic Schedule In The Next Ten Days

The Supreme Court has reopened today, after the Diwali Break. Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who will leave the office on 17 November, will have a hectic work schedule reportedly.

The Epix court has earlier made it clear that it will deliver the final verdict of Ayodhya before Gogoi, leaves the office. Now with only nine working days left for Gogoi, the court has 6 cases that are waiting for final verdicts.

After Gogoi, demits the office, S.A. Bobde will be his successor.

Let's have a look at the key cases that will be given verdicts before Gogoi leaves the office.

Ayodhya dispute:

Out of the cases waiting for the verdicts, no other case except the Ayodhya case has political and religious sensitivity. The dispute started with whom to grant the 2.77 acres of land. Hindus claim that Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Rama and Muslims say that as the Babri Masjid was demolished, they should be given the land.

Rafale Deal:

Other than Ayodhya, this case is also a high-profile case with a lot of political sensitivity. The petitioners of this case wanted the Supreme Court to review the judgment of the Court that had dismissed the please which challenges India's agreement with France to get 36 Rafale fighter jets. The review petitioner has requested a probe into the deal on the grounds of alleged secret "stolen documents".

Sabarimala Case:

In terms of Religious sensitivity, the Sabarimala Case tops the list. In its landmark judgment, the supreme court has lifted the archaic ban on women entering the Lord Ayyappa temple. The apex court will give its final verdict on whether women between the ages of 10 and 50 years should be allowed to enter the temple or not.

Contempt Case on Rahul Gandhi:

The Contempt case against Rahul Gandhi will be reviewed on the same day, Rafale will be reviewed.

The case was filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for attributing, "chowkidaar chor hai". Rahul Gandhi made it clear that he earlier tendered an unconditional apology for "wrongly attributing" the remarks.

Constitutional validity of Finance Act 2017 passed as money bill:

The bench headed by Gogoi has reserved its verdict on a bunch of petitions which challenge the constitutional validity of the Finance Act 2017 on money bill passed by the Parliament.

Whether office of CJI should come under RTI:

This is an interesting case on whether the CJI office comes under the Right To Information (RTI) act or not.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by CJI Gogoi has reviewed the plea filed by the Supreme Court secretary general against the judgment given by the Delhi High Court in January 2010 declaring the CJI office as "public authority".
