Lady Leader, On Fast For 10 Days, Collapses

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal collapsed and lost consciousness on Sunday while she was on a hunger strike. She was on a hunger strike at the Samta Sthal to demand capital punishment for the rapists within six months of their conviction. She was fighting against the inordinate delay in implementing the punishment, especially the capital punishment. She was immediately rushed to the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital, where she is currently been treated.
On Saturday, she praised the Disha Act, which is aimed at quicker punishment to the rapists. The act has been introduced by the Andhra Pradesh Government and entails the severest possible punishment to the rapists within 21 days of the heinous crime. Seven days are meant to complete the investigation and 11 days for the hearing in the court of law.
Swati has been fasting for over 10 days and she resisted the doctors’ advice to call off the strike as her health condition was deteriorating.
