TDP set to lose its last weapon soon
X
The last weapon in the hands of Opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu will finally be lost soon. Till now, he was using the numerical superiority in the legislative council to stall Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's plans. He was blocking the passage of the bills and exasperated YS Jagan so much that he even thought of dissolving the AP Legislative Council altogether.

However, the tables would be turned now as the YSRCP will now get a majority in the 58 member council in AP. There would soon be elections to 14 vacant MLC seats. Thanks to the stupendous majority it enjoys, the YSRCP is sure to bag all of them. The YSRCP has 151 out of 175 MLAs, 86 percent of the MPTC seats, 98 per cent of the ZPTCs. Similarly, it has 82.80 per cent of the local body wards and divisions.

Three of the 14 seats will be elected by the MLAs and 11 would be elected by the local bodies. With the new entrants, the number of the YSRCP MLCs would go up to 32. This will give the YSRCP a numerical superiority and an ability to get all its bills passed. The current strength of various parties in the AP Legislative Council are as follows: The YSRCP 18, TDP 17, PDF 4, independents 4, BJP 1. The term of the BJP members and 13 other members will end soon.

The YSRCP feels that getting bills pertaining to 3 capitals passed would become easier. Similarly, bills like the one relating to English medium education would also get passed. The YS Jagan government was finding it difficult to get them passed as it did not have the requisite numbers in the council. Now that will soon become a thing of past.
