The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is in a fix over the Rs 49.7 crore worth of demonetised notes that the devotees have offered after the deadline for exchanging those notes are over. All its attempts to get these currency notes exchanged have failed and repeated requests to the Union Minister of Finance headed by Nirmala Sitaraman have failed to yield the desired results.

After the demonetisation exercise, several devotees who for some reason have failed to exchange their old currency notes, have offered them to the Lord Venkateshwara by dropping them in the hundis. The total value is Rs 49.7 crore. However, the union finance ministry has refused to entertain the TTD pleas claiming that since the deadline was long over, it could not do anything. It also said that if the TTD request is accepted, then there would be many more such requests seeking exemptions. So, the Union Finance ministry has turned down their requests..

The TTD has taken up this issue for four times. Even the present TTD chief, YV Subba Reddy, met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman once in New Delhi and tried to impress upon the need to exchange these currency notes. But, Nirmala Sitaraman has not accepted them. the Central government is adamant that no note would be taken aftered deadline for exchanging the currency notes was over. The matter is dragging on since early 2017.
