There is some speck of Andhra Pradesh in the precious gifts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is currently on a visit of India. The Prime Minister presented her with a gift made in Andhra Pradesh along with a Pashmina Shawl from newly formed Union Territory Ladakh. He gifted her Ratnam Pen, a famous pen with a history spanning over 90 years.
Ratnam Pens are fountain pens made with wood and brass. The company was formed in 1930s and Mahatma Gandhi was very impressed by these pens. He visited Ratnam Pen company when he visited Rajahmundry and the company gifted him pens. Gandhi used these pens regularly. Gandhi recommended these pens to many people. Modi presented to Merkel, a letter written on hand-ade paper by Gandhi to the owner of the Ratnam company.
However, with the advent of ball-point pens, the popularity of fountain pens has come down considerably. Despite all this Ratnams are still going strong.Ratnam Pens has a factory in Rajahmundry and is still involved in producing pens. It is on the Main Road in Rajahmundry.
