What is keeping BJP national chief Amit Shah busy these days? He is currently busy "acquiring" majority in Rajya Sabha. Though the BJP government is getting bills passed in Lok Sabha, it is unable to pass through the Rajya Sabha test as the BJP and NDA do not have a clear majority.
As part of increasing the BJP tally, four TDP MPs have merged with the BJP. The latest is that INLD's only member Ramkumar Kashyam has merged his party into the BJP. With this the BJP number has gone up to 76. The NDA has now 110 and still needs 14 seats to get clear majority. Next month, there are bypolls for 10 seats and next year, another 10 seats will have polls. The BJP will win a majority of seats. In 2020, there are going to be biennial elections to 72 seats. If the BJP performs very well in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand states, where there are going to be assembly elections. The bypolls would be held after these elections. So, instead of 2021, the BJP and the NDA will get the complete majority in 2020 itself. This will make it the only party to get a majority in both the upper and lower house after a gap of 15 years. This will also make it get a majority one year before and will enable the government to get important bills passed one year early. That's Amit Shah's strategy.
