Why National Leaders For Local GHMC Battle?

Why is the BJP bringing in national leaders for campaign in the GHMC region? Already national leaders like Tejaswi Surya, Vinitha Srinivasan, Union ministers Prakash Jawadekar and Smriti Irani have campaigned in the city and key leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, national president JP Nadda, former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and others are going to campaign vigorously in the coming four days. In fact, Amit Shah will campaign for the party on the last day of the campaign.

Party strategists say that the BJP national leadership is showing so much interest in a local election as it sees these elections as a gateway to capture Telangana in 2023. The want to win Telangana and add another state to its tally in the South, besides Karnataka. The party feels that if the party performs creditably, it would be seen as an alternative to the TRS, which is riding on high anti-incumbency.

The party expects that soon after GHMC elections, a large number of Congress and TRS leaders will queue up to join the BJP. This will further weaken the Congress and make its votes get transferred to the BJP. Also, the TRS would become more vulnerable and in its anxiety to get even with the BJP, it would made tactical mistakes. The BJP estimates that the anti-incumbency against the TRS would further consolidate and it would help the BJP.

It is with 2023 in mind that the BJP is investing its national leadership in the GHMC elections.
