Has Rahul Gandhi toned down his criticism of eminent freedomfighter Savarkar? It appears so. On Wednesday, he had deleted all the tweets where he had criticized Savarkar. He has till now maintained that Savarkar had sought British pardon. "I am Gandhi not Savarkar," he famously quipped when he was asked if he would apologise for his remarks on Modis.
It is learnt that Rahul backtracked after Uddhav Thackeray threatened to withdraw from the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance if Rahul continues with his criticism of Savarkar. For Shiv Sena, Savarkar is not just an icon, but also a vote-catcher. Rahul's repeated comments against the great freedom fighter have rankled the party. At the same time, Savarkar's grandson too threatened to slap a defamation suit against Rahul Gandhi. This too must have made his backtrack on Savarkar.
Meanwhile, NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar is believed to have stepped in to resolve the imbroglio. He is said to have told Rahul Gandhi to tone down his criticism of Savarkar and focus on real issues like unemployment and price rise. He said Savarkar was not an RSS worker. He led the Hindu Mahasabha and had several differences with the RSS.
These things must have worked on Rahul Gandhi and he and the Congress Party have mellowed down on the issue of Savarkar. For now, the Congress appears to be looking to bury the issue to save the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
