Will Kharge contest for Congress President's post?

Is another senior warhorse going to throw his hat into the ring of the election for the president of the Congress Party? It appears so. If sources are to be believed, Rajya Sabha MP and senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge too might join the presidential race. The names of seniors like former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and Mukul Wasnik too are doing rounds.

The first family of the Congress had actually tried to kill two birds with one shot by making Ashok Gehlot the party president. It would have a loyalist as the party president and at the same time, young Sachin Pilot would be made the CM of Rajasthan. But, wily Gehlot rebelled and showed that the majority of MLAs were with him.  Now, the high command is said to be pushing the case of former MP chief minister Digvijay Singh.

However, given the fact that Diggy Raja is known for putting his foot in his mouth often, the party seems to be having second thoughts. Suave Shashi Tharoor is already the presidential candidate and is said to be having the support of those who want reforms in the 138-year-old Congress Party.

Sonia-Rahul-Priyanka troika now wants Kharge to head the party. Kharge is a senior Gandhi family loyalist and is also a Dalit. In fact, before joining the Congress Party, Kharge was with the Republican Party. Interestingly, both Tharoor and Kharge are south Indians and both have cut their teeth outside the Congress. While Tharoor was a career diplomat who worked in the UN, Kharge was a Dalit activist before joining the Congress Party.
